Reefjet Whitsunday Island News
5:00pm, Thu 01 Jul 2010 : Whale Watching the Whitsundays
|

|
July to September is whale season in the Whitsundays. Fully protected in Australia and even more so in the Whitsundays, the annual migration of these majestic beasts is something to leave you in awe and wonder. There are a number of varieties to be spotted, but it is Humpbacks that are the most awesome. The Humpbacks grow to 14 metres and a massive weight of 40 tonnes. The Whitsundays also the location that the Humpback whales often choose to give birth. It is estimated that there are about 7000 Humpback whales that migrate along the Queensland coast, with an estimated 700 calves born along the way each year.
Reefjet and sister ship Mantaray operate daily trips to the Whitsunday Islands, Whitehaven Beach and “Green Zone” snorkeling and scuba dive locations. Crossing the Whitsunday passage from our base at Airlie Beach, we often sight whales enjoying the Whitsundays as much as our guests, frolicking in the water, leaping into the air, feeding their young and sometimes simply sleeping on the surface. We will take plenty of time out to check our the world's largest animal and respectfully observe them from a safe distance.
Whales have even be spotted in past years near Whitehaven Beach. Perhaps even they can appreciate the crystal clear waters washing onto the shores of the 6 kilometre pure silica sand beach, or maybe they would like come ashore and build a sand castle. What is certain is that if they were to beach themselves, they would probably have a Kiwi accent based upon this evidence that we have found on youtube.com.
Whale watching is an added bonus to travel on Reefjet and Mantaray and during July - September and while we can't guarantee sightings we can say that is a regular occurrence. In lieu of this there is always the great diversity of tropical Great Barrier Reef fish, large and small that live amongst the coral year round, the frequently site turtles complimented by the slightly more aloof local dolphins population.
It is only Reefjet and Mantaray that offer so much in one day, Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet lookout, snorkel AND dive on Green Zone Coral along with a comfortable ride and plentiful lunch assisted by our friendly crew.
